Overview
Some onsite obstacles have irregular shapes or do not align well with the preset obstacle options. In these cases, the Scan Shape feature provides the fastest and most accurate way to capture and record the obstacle.
When to Use Scan Shape
Use Scan Shape when an obstacle:
- Has an odd or irregular shape
- Does not fit well within any preset obstacle geometry
- Needs to be captured accurately without manual approximation
How to Use Scan Shape
- Open the Obstacles menu in the Dusty App on the iPad
- Select Scan Shape
- Using the reflector, move to the first vertex (corner) of the obstacle
- Ensure the reflector is being actively tracked by the laser
- On the iPad, select Record Point to capture the vertex
- Move the reflector to the next vertex and repeat Record Point
- Continue recording each vertex one by one around the obstacle
- Once all vertices have been captured, select Close Shape in the app to complete the obstacle
Verifying the Recorded Shape
- Zoom in on the obstacle within the Dusty App to review point placement
- Select Locate to watch each recorded point being verified in real time as the laser tracks the reflector
- Confirm the shape accurately matches the physical obstacle before saving
Best Practices
- Capture vertices in a logical order (clockwise or counterclockwise)
- Ensure the reflector is stationary when recording each point
- Use enough vertices to accurately represent the obstacle shape
- Verify all points before closing and saving the shape
Why Scan Shape Is Recommended
- Handles irregular and complex shapes
- More accurate than approximating with presets
- Reduces rework later in the workflow
- Provides confidence that obstacles are correctly captured onsite
