Overview
Operators can create manual control points using printed line intersections or points. This is useful when a clear, physical reference point is needed onsite. For this to work correctly, the printed lines must truly intersect—there cannot be any gap between them.
This workflow should only be used when surveyed control is not available and the intersection point is known to be accurate.
Key Requirements for line intersections
- The lines must be printed linework
- Printed lines are shown as pink in the Dusty App
- Unprinted lines appear black
- The printed lines must physically intersect
- There cannot be any space between the lines
- Always zoom in on the drawing in the Dusty App to confirm the lines intersect
How to Create a Manual Control Point for Line Intersections
- Open the Dusty App on the iPad
- Identify and select the two printed intersecting lines
- Confirm both lines are pink
- Zoom in to ensure the lines fully intersect with no gap
- Navigate to the Station menu
- Select Control Points
- Open the Control Points menu (three horizontal lines)
- Select Create Control at Intersection
- Name the control point
- The system will default to CP01
- If control points already exist using this naming convention, the name will automatically increment (e.g., CP02, CP03)
- Edit the name if needed
- Confirm and save the manual control point
Marking the Control Point Onsite (Best Practice)
After creating the manual control point in the app, it should be clearly marked on the jobsite.
- Physically mark the intersection point where the two printed lines meet
- Draw a circle around the intersection for visibility
- Write the control point name (e.g., CP01, CP02) next to the circle
- Ensure the marking is clear, legible, and durable for future reference
Verifying the Control Point
- Zoom in on the drawing to confirm the control point appears exactly at the intersection
- Use Locate (if available) to verify placement
- Confirm the physical marking matches the control point name in the app
Best Practices
- Use manual CPs only when necessary. Surveyed control is always preferred.
- Clearly label intersection-based CPs so they are not confused with surveyed control.
- Do not mix low-confidence intersection points with surveyed CPs in the same station.
- Only use printed (pink) linework for control points
- Maintain a consistent control point naming convention
- Always mark control points physically after creation
- Create intentional printed intersections when control points are required
- Verify intersections at maximum zoom before saving
Common Issues
- Create Control at Intersection option is unavailable
- One or both selected lines are not printed
- Control point is not created
- Lines do not truly intersect
- A small gap exists between line ends
- Control point is difficult to find onsite
- Physical marking was skipped or unclear
