Field Release: iPad & FieldPrinter

This release makes FieldPrinter 2 safer than ever near cliff edges and drop-offs. It delivers a broad set of improvements that Operators will notice in the Dusty iPad app: stationing and verification reliability fixes, floor elevation measurement, and numerous bug fixes across layout, control points, and elevation workflows.

VDC Release: Dusty Portal

Dusty Portal has been updated with improved permission and authentication behaviors to address confusing errors for admins and users, and the Elevation module improvements to make floor elevation data easier to read, refresh, and report on. This release removes friction in both areas without requiring any action from Operators.

This release also adds project-level line styles, QR code CSV uploads, a high-resolution PDF export, and a faster production page viewer for VDC teams working in Portal.

Field Updates

Export Control Points as CSV: Get Your Point Data Out of the iPad

Operators can now export control points directly from the iPad as a CSV file. The export includes point number, X/Y/Z coordinates, and description for every control point recorded on a layout, so a VDC team can review or hand off that data in a spreadsheet or survey tool without leaving the field. If the field team uses Flexible Control to create control points based on existing conditions, such as columns, walls, gridlines, or the edge of the slab, you can now directly bring those back to the digital model and the VDC team.

How to export:

1. Open the Station Information panel.
2. Tap Export Control Points CSV.
3. The file downloads with point number, X/Y/Z, and description columns for each control point.

Stationing: Faster Error Diagnosis and On-Demand Station Verification

Stationing and station verification are faster and more informative in this release, with two specific improvements that reduce interruptions and speed up diagnosis.

A clear error message when the tracker solution appears flipped. When two control points are accidentally switched while scanning, the tracker solution can appear upside down. Operators now get a specific, descriptive error for this case instead of a generic failure message, making the root cause immediately apparent.

Verify Now is back. Your laser tracker has to stay put for your layout to stay accurate — a bump, vibration, or gust of wind can shift it mid-print and throw off every point after that. The tracker already checks itself against the verification reflector every 15 minutes, and with Verify Now back, you can run that same check on demand whenever you want, confirming the tracker hasn't moved before it ruins a print.

Floor Elevation (Beta): Collect Heatmap Data Only Where You Need It

Operators can now use the iPad to choose to collect area elevation data only for defined measurement areas, rather than requiring background elevation collection to be on at all times.

Previously, collecting heatmap data required that background elevation be enabled for the entire job or turned off entirely. This release adds a middle option: background elevation can be off while FieldPrinter still collects elevation data for the specific measurement areas an Operator has defined.

In the Dusty iPad App:

1. In the setup panel, disable Background Elevation.
2. Define measurement areas on the canvas.
3. FieldPrinter collects elevation data for those areas only and does not collect elevation heatmap data when printing the rest of the queue.

Printing is also no longer blocked when elevation points are in the print queue, and elevation is disabled in the setup panel.

Cliff Safety: Safer Recovery Behavior Near Drop-Offs

FieldPrinter now handles cliff-edge scenarios more safely, with two specific fixes for L-shaped cliff-edge behavior.

At L-shaped cliff edges, when FieldPrinter's front and rear cliff sensors triggered alternatively in a loop, it used to be possible for FieldPrinter to get stuck, appearing to rock back and forth as it tried to navigate away from the two opposing edge conditions. FieldPrinter now handles this condition successfully.

When FieldPrinter is trapped at an L-shaped cliff edge with both front and rear cliff sensors triggered simultaneously during recovery, FieldPrinter now cancels all queued print tasks. Printing is not safe to resume in this position. Operators should use the joystick or lift the FieldPrinter away from the edge before queuing new print tasks.

More Consistent Printed Text Sizing: Cleaner, More Predictable Lettering

FieldPrinter now prints all-caps text at a more consistent size instead of automatically scaling it up to fill the full printhead height. Lowercase detection now recognizes more scripts beyond Latin characters, so mixed-language layouts print with more consistent lettering.

Elevation Grid Data Rows: See Exact Elevation Values As You Collect

The Job Report now shows the exact highest and lowest elevation grid values as they're collected, the same way point elevation data already displays — Operators get the specific numbers in view immediately, without waiting for a full report.

Auto-Dim iPad Screen: Longer Battery Life Between Charges

The iPad screen now dims automatically after 30 seconds without interaction, then restores full brightness the moment an Operator touches the screen again. Original brightness settings stay untouched — dimming and restoring both happen automatically, cutting down on battery drain during long stretches on the jobsite.

Safer Radio Power-Loss Handling: FieldPrinter Stops Instead of Wandering

FieldPrinter now stops navigating if the tracker radio loses power or disconnects, rather than continuing moving without position data (which risked drifting off course). FieldPrinter also now alerts the Operator when the front flap is open and blocking printing.

Image Printing: Print PNG, JPEG, BMP, and GIF Files from the iPad

FieldPrinter can now print raster image files directly, not just SVG images. Operators can send a PNG, JPEG, BMP, or GIF from the iPad the same way they'd send a layout, and FieldPrinter reproduces it on the ground.

Two related printing issues are also fixed in this release: transparent areas in a PNG no longer print as solid black, and images printed with the right printhead are now correctly reordered to prevent smudging.

To use it:

1. From the iPad, long-press a position in the canvas/layout, and select "Print Image".
2. Select an image that exists on the iPad. You can select an image from either Files or Photos.
3. Use the settings to choose the size, orientation, and exact position to print the image.
4. FieldPrinter prints the image using the correct pen order and renders transparent areas correctly.

Additional UI Improvements for the Dusty iPad App

• Persistent control point history: The iPad now remembers which control points were used in the last stationing for a layout, and the information persists across sessions and reconnects.
• Stationing state isolated per project: Stationing data from one project (including anchor point and locked state) no longer appears in other projects that share the same control points.
• FieldPrinter power-saving mode message: The "FieldPrinter is in a power-saving mode" message now includes a visual indicator to make it easier to spot in the side panel.
• Slope-limit messaging: Warnings referencing slope limitations consistently read "5°/10% slopes."
• Spanish localization: All Spanish-language text now uses the informal (tú) register consistently throughout the app.

Bug Fixes

iPad

• Fixed pull-to-refresh errors in Field Ready Layouts. Pulling down to refresh the layout list no longer produces a "Failed to get updates" error.
• Fixed elevation workflow edge cases. The iPad now shows a warning when an elevation task is removed from the queue after a station verification failure. The "-0" display in elevation summaries has been corrected to "0".
• Fixed stale anchor swipe action. The anchor icon no longer remains visible and tappable after stationing is locked.
• Fixed "previously stationed" label disappearing after reconnect. The label now persists correctly after the iPad reconnects to FieldPrinter.
• Fixed layout loading delays and stale scroll position. Switching between layouts is faster, and the control point list now resets scroll position correctly when a new layout opens.
• Fixed grid size flashing a stale value on reconnect. The grid size no longer briefly shows a value from a previously opened layout when reconnecting.
• Fixed canvas selection visuals. Deselect-all and marquee selection now correctly update label and shape visuals across all node types.
• Fixed toast notifications blocking joystick. Toast notifications no longer overlap the joystick icon in the top bar.
• Fixed Point Style Legend text height. Changing the text height for the Point Style Legend layer now correctly resizes the label text.
• CSV export/import toasts: Fixed success and error toasts for CSV export and import rendering behind their modals instead of on top.
• CSV export descriptions: Fixed CSV export showing internal metadata instead of the control point name for jig control points.
• Info bubble alignment: Fixed inconsistent vertical spacing between the layer-info bubble and the measurement-area bubble.
• Station verification icon: Fixed the "Verify Station Location — Failed" warning icon rendering smaller than other status icons.
• Missing "Failed" label: Fixed a missing "Failed" label when station verification fails.
• Consistency dialog: Fixed the Control Point Consistency dialog appearing unnecessarily before the "failed to station" error.
• QR code highlighting: Fixed a reprinted QR code not turning pink immediately after printing.
• Setup toggles: Fixed Reset Setup and iPad-FieldPrinter reconnects incorrectly resetting the Background Measurement and Measure Elevation toggles.
• Station Information warning: Fixed a warning triangle incorrectly appearing next to Station Information after every control point recording.
• Print queue zoom: Fixed print queue points appearing stretched after zooming in and out.
• "Previously stationed" label (Field-Ready layouts): Fixed the label disappearing when switching between Field-Ready layouts.
• Advanced Settings: Fixed being unable to tap Done in Advanced Settings without force-quitting the app.
• Context menu: Fixed the canvas context menu being cut off at the top of the screen.
• Station Verification label: Fixed the Station Verification point showing as "sv_point" instead of its proper label.
• Control point undo: Fixed a cleared control point becoming unselectable for stationing after using Undo.
• LTE status: Fixed FieldPrinter LTE connection status not reflecting in the iPad app.
• Locate button: Fixed the Locate button overlapping the information bubble in the right toolbar.

FieldPrinter

• More actionable print-start errors. When FieldPrinter cannot start printing, the iPad now surfaces all precondition failures at once instead of stopping at the first one, so Operators can clear everything blocking a print in a single pass.
• Fixed repeated navigation near walls. FieldPrinter no longer repeatedly attempts the same navigation path when printing close to obstacles with the printhead extended.
• Motor protection: Corrected current-limiting configuration to reduce risk of motor controller damage.
• Merged shape rendering: Fixed merged shape groups growing too large, which could cause long render stalls and idle time before printing.
• Cliff detection: Fixed duplicate "cliff clone" detections stacking on top of each other for the same obstacle.
• Radio version checks: Improved reliability of tracker radio software version checks.

VDC Updates

Project Line Styles: Full Control Over Line Styles, Scoped to Each Project

Line styles used to live only at the organization level, so changing one for a single job meant changing it everywhere. Portal now gives every project its own line style list, so an Editor can set up a project's line styles without touching any other project or the organization's shared list.

Each new project starts from the organization's line style template, and Editors can then add, edit, or remove line styles for that project alone. Changes never propagate back to the template or to other projects. Line styles currently in use on a layout can't be deleted; Portal shows a message instead of removing something a layout still depends on.

To use it:

1. Open a project and go to its Line Styles page.
2. Add, edit, or remove line styles for that project.
3. Export a project's line styles to a file, or import a set from another project or organization with access.

Organizations still maintain a shared line style template that seeds every new project. Set that up once in organization settings to keep new projects starting from a consistent baseline.

QR Code CSV Upload: Add QR Codes to a Layout from a CSV File

Portal now supports uploading QR codes onto a layout from a CSV file, so QR codes can be placed and printed alongside the rest of a layout instead of added by hand.

Uploaded QR codes render on their own layer in the layout viewer and now appear in the production PDF export as well. Each QR code's rotation follows the layer's Point Angle setting rather than a separate angle column in the CSV.

To use it:

1. Open a layout's Files panel and go to the new QR Codes section.
2. Upload a CSV file containing the QR code data.
3. The QR codes render on their own layer in the viewer and preview page.

QR Code Sizing in Dusty Portal: Place QR codes without guessing how large they'll print

Portal now scales QR code shapes based on character length, so the preview in the layout canvas reflects how large the QR code will actually be when printed.

Previously, all QR code shapes displayed at a fixed size regardless of content — meaning VDC professionals couldn't reliably tell whether two QR codes would overlap until the layout was printed in the field. Portal now calculates a size estimate from the number of characters in each QR code and scales the shape accordingly.

To use: No action needed. QR code shapes in existing and new layouts automatically reflect the updated sizing when the layout is opened.

High-Resolution Production PDF: Export a Print-Ready Layout from the Production Page

Portal now supports a high-resolution PDF export directly from the production page, so a finished layout can be downloaded and shared as a print-ready file without leaving the page.

To use it, open a layout's production page and use the download PDF button to generate the file.

Production Page Viewer: Smoother Pan and Zoom on Large Files

Portal ships a new, GPU-rendered layout viewer for the production page, built to keep large, complex layouts responsive instead of slowing down as file size grows. This update applies to the production page specifically; similar improvements to the other layout views are coming in an upcoming release.

For complex or large layouts, users will see up to 60x faster performance compared to the previous viewer.

Additional UI Improvements for Dusty Portal

• Elevation Coverage widget now shows "Measured / Total": The label below the donut chart previously read "Measured / Remaining," which implied the second number was what remained to be measured. It now reads "Measured / Total" to accurately describe what the counts represent.
• Elevation page refresh now updates the full page: Clicking the refresh icon next to "Last updated" on the Elevation page previously refreshed only the Elevation Summary section. The full page now refreshes.
• Elevation empty states handled without error messages: Layouts with no elevation data no longer display "Could not get measure data" or "Could not get point names" error toasts when the page is refreshed. Layouts with no points now gray out the Points tab immediately on load instead of briefly enabling it.
• Layouts with print data now show an icon in the layout list, making it possible to tell at a glance which layouts already have printed data without opening each one.
• The Floor Elevation Report's Points tab label changed from "Elevation Coverage" to "Points Measured," since that section is based on points.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed: Login blocked after deactivation from one organization — Users who are deactivated from one organization are no longer blocked from logging into Portal if they still belong to another organization.
• Fixed: Previously deactivated users can now be re-invited — Admins can re-add a user who was previously deactivated or removed through Permission Manager. The "A user with this email already exists in an organization" error no longer appears when re-inviting a valid user.
• Fixed: Erroneous permission error toasts for non-system users — Non-system users performing allowed actions in Portal no longer see "You do not have permission to perform that action" error messages.
• Fixed: Error toasts when opening a layout from the Files view — Opening a layout via VIEW LAYOUT no longer incorrectly shows "Could not save edits" or permission-related toasts.
• Fixed: Removing a guest member no longer affects other guests — Removing one guest from a project previously caused incorrect behavior for other guest members on the same project. Each guest's access is now managed independently.
• Fixed: Pro-feature popup appears correctly when Pro is disabled — The Pro-feature prompt now displays as expected when the Pro flag is turned off.
• Fixed: Switching to Prepare Layout no longer shows a brief incorrect state — Navigating from the Production or Elevation tab back to the Prepare Layout tab now loads the correct view immediately without a transitional display glitch.
• Corrected inch-to-meter unit conversion — Portal's internal conversion now uses the NIST-standard value for inches, correcting a small measurement inaccuracy.
• Fixed: Area Elevation PDF report header incorrectly read "Measured Samples" — now reads "Measured Grids" to accurately describe the data.
• Fixed: Multi-page Area Elevation PDF reports were missing page numbers — page numbers now appear at the bottom of each page.
• Fixed layer visibility bleeding between layouts that share the same uploaded file — turning off a layer in one layout no longer turns it off in every linked layout.
• Project settings will now remember the tab last used (General, Member Settings, or Line Styles), so reloading the page or adding a member no longer switches to a different tab automatically.
• The Line Style selector in the layer properties panel now shows an accurate preview of the selected style, and the canvas updates to match.
• Fixed a sign-in issue that could leave an already-signed-in user stuck on the account setup screen instead of reaching the sign-in form when trying to log in as someone else.
• Project-only Editors and Viewers can no longer view an organization's full user list by navigating to its URL directly.
• CSV uploads with invalid file content now show a clear error message instead of a generic one.
• Fixed CSV files with an uppercase .CSV extension failing to upload.
• Project Viewers can no longer access an organization's Line Styles page directly.
• Fixed the Floor Elevation Report's Points tab dropdown label, which read "Reference" instead of "Reference Point."
• Fixed an issue where losing access to a project mid-session (for example, after a permission change) could crash the page instead of showing a clean error.
• Org Viewers are no longer shown Editor-level controls they don't have permission to use.
