Overview
This article explains how to safely clean FieldPrinter ink cartridges to restore print quality and prevent clogs. Regular cleaning helps maintain consistent line quality and prevents printing issues in the field.
Symptoms / What You’ll See in the Field
- Faded or missing lines during printing
- Gaps or streaks in printed layout
- Inconsistent ink output from one or both print heads
- Ink not flowing after cartridge install
Why This Happens
- Ink buildup on printhead from regular use
- Dried ink due to inactivity or storage conditions
- Debris or dust contamination on the cartridge
- Extreme temperatures affecting ink flow
How to Clean Ink Cartridges
- Power off the FieldPrinter and remove the battery.
- Open the cartridge access area.
- Carefully remove the ink cartridges.
- Inspect the printhead for visible ink buildup or debris.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth or wipe.
- Lightly dampen the cloth with water (for water-based ink) if needed.
- Gently wipe the printhead surface.
- Do not scrub or apply pressure to the printhead.
- Allow the cartridge to air dry completely.
- Reinstall the cartridges securely.
- Power on the FieldPrinter.
- Run a short test print to confirm proper ink flow.
What Not to Do
- Do not use compressed air as it can damage the printhead
- Do not use solvents or chemicals unless explicitly approved
- Do not touch printhead with fingers to avoid contamination
- Do not reinstall wet cartridges
Best Practices / Prevention
- Print regularly to prevent ink from drying out
- Store cartridges properly in recommended temperature ranges
- Keep cartridges clean when not in use
- Inspect printheads before each shift
- Use correct ink type for conditions (water-based vs solvent-based)
