To ensure full compatibility and access to new features, both the iPad and FieldPrinter must be updated to the latest version.
When the iPad shows New Update Available, tap Update Now, finish the install in Self Service, then reconnect to the FieldPrinter — the FieldPrinter software updates automatically once the iPad is current. Here's the full process, plus what to do if a step doesn't behave the way you expect.
How do I know a software update is ready?
The Dusty App checks for updates on its own and shows a New Update Available prompt when one is ready for the app, the FieldPrinter 2, or both.
The prompt reads: "A new software version for FieldPrinter 2 and the app is ready! Please update now." You have two options:
- Remind Me Later dismisses the prompt for now. It reappears the next time the app checks for updates.
- Update Now starts the update process right away.
How do I start the update from the iPad?
Tap Update Now on the prompt. The iPad automatically opens Self Service, the app catalog Dusty uses to distribute and manage the iPad app — you don't need to find and launch Self Service yourself.
If you already dismissed the prompt with Remind Me Later and want to update before it reappears, open Self Service directly from the iPad home screen instead of waiting.
How do I install the update in Self Service?
In Self Service, find Dusty Robotics Print Pro and tap Update.
A few things to know about this step:
- Tap it once. Self Service doesn't show an in-app progress bar — the button briefly shows a spinner and then reverts to Update, even though the app is installing normally in the background. Tapping it again doesn't speed anything up.
- Watch the home screen for real progress. Press the Home button (or swipe up) and look at the Print Pro app icon: it dims and fills with a circular progress ring as the update downloads and installs.
- Give it a moment after the ring finishes. The button in Self Service only flips from Update to Open after the iPad checks in and confirms the install, so there's a short lag even once the install itself is done. That lag is normal, not a stall.
How do I know the FieldPrinter itself finished updating?
Once the app finishes updating, open it and connect to the FieldPrinter 2 as you normally would. If the FieldPrinter is running older software than the iPad app, the iPad automatically uploads the matching software to the FieldPrinter as part of reconnection. There's no separate manual step to update the robot itself.
To protect your data, the FieldPrinter is never automatically downgraded. If the FieldPrinter is somehow running newer software than the iPad app, the iPad will notify you and prompt you to contact Support instead of attempting to connect.
What if Self Service says "This content is unavailable"?
If tapping Update Now takes you to Self Service and you see the message "This content is unavailable. For more information, contact your administrator", it isn't an account or permissions problem — it's a known issue on app versions older than 2.14, where an app ID mismatch stops Self Service from automatically starting the update that the iPad app forwarded to it.
If you see this message, you don't need to contact your administrator. Instead:
- Close the message.
- Open Self Service directly from the iPad home screen.
- Find Dusty Robotics Print Pro and tap Install manually.
What if tapping Install in Self Service doesn't seem to do anything?
If the Install (or Update) button flashes and goes back to its original state, the install is still working — Self Service just doesn't display any in-app install feedback for this app, so there's no progress bar to reassure you it's running.
To confirm it's actually installing:
- Tap Install or Update once, and avoid tapping it again.
- Go to the iPad home screen and find the Print Pro icon.
- Watch for the icon to dim and show a circular progress ring filling in — that's the real install progress.
- Once the ring completes, the app is installed and ready to open, even if Self Service hasn't flipped its button to Open yet.
