What You're Seeing
The iPad battery is draining faster than expected during a print session. A fully charged iPad may reach 30% or lower after approximately 4 hours of use.
Why This Happens
This is normal iPad behavior under demanding field conditions. Several factors contribute to accelerated battery drain during FieldPrinter operations:
- High screen brightness — particularly in bright outdoor environments where the screen needs to be visible
- Continuous Wi-Fi usage — the Dusty app requires an active network connection throughout the print session
- Extreme temperatures — both very hot and very cold environments can reduce battery performance significantly. Apple recommends 62° to 72° F (16° to 22° C) as the ideal operating range, and temperatures above 95° F (35° C) can permanently affect battery capacity apple
- Active app usage — screen, network, and disk activity are among the highest power consumers on any iPad.
How to Extend Battery Life
1. Reduce screen brightness. Screen brightness should be lowered to the minimum comfortable level. Auto-Brightness can also be enabled to adjust the screen to lighting conditions. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. apple
2. Enable Low Power Mode. Low Power Mode can be enabled by going to Settings > Battery. This reduces display brightness, optimizes device performance, and minimizes system animations. apple
3. Turn the display off between print queues. When a large print queue has been selected and the FieldPrinter is actively printing, the iPad display can be turned off. It does not need to remain on throughout the entire job.
4. Charge during breaks. The iPad should be plugged in and charged during lunch breaks or any extended downtime. An EcoFlow battery or similar portable power source can be used on-site to top up the charge between sessions.
5. Operate in the shade when possible. On hot days, the iPad should be kept out of direct sunlight. High ambient temperatures accelerate battery drain and can affect long-term battery health.
6. Disable Background App Refresh for unused apps. Background App Refresh can be turned off by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This prevents other apps from consuming power while the Dusty app is in use. apple
