The joystick controller is the handheld remote you use to drive the FieldPrinter by hand and to manage the print queue while a job runs. This guide covers how to drive the robot, what each button does, how to run a test print, and how to change the batteries.
Your joystick controller comes connected to your robot from the factory, so it is ready to use out of the box — no setup or pairing needed on your end.
Before you start
- The controller uses 2 AA batteries (already installed).
- Spare AA batteries are in the Accessories pouch inside the FieldPrinter case.
- The FieldPrinter must be powered on.
How to drive the robot
Driving always requires the Drive button (LB) — the robot will not move unless you are holding it.
- Press and hold the drive button (LB), the upper-left shoulder button.
- While still holding LB, either:
- Move either joystick to steer the robot, or
- Press the D-pad buttons to move it.
- Release LB to stop.
Hold LB the entire time you want the robot to move. Letting go of LB stops all movement.
How to pause the robot
One thing worth noting: LB now does double duty — hold it with a joystick/D-pad to drive, hold it alone while the robot is working to pause.
Button reference
Press these buttons to control the print queue. Each acts on the print job that is running.
| Button | Command | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A | Flip | Inverts the printing direction of the next object in the print queue. |
| B | Retract | Retracts the print head when it is fully extended to the far left or far right. |
| X | Reprint | Reprints the previous object in the queue before the robot starts the next one. |
| Y | Skip | Skips the next object in the print queue. |
How to run a test print
Use a test print to confirm a print head is releasing ink. You test the left and right print heads separately.
- Press and hold the drive button (LB).
- While holding LB, press:
- LT (left trigger) to test the left print head, or
- RT (right trigger) to test the right print head.
- Keep holding and drive the robot so it moves while the print head releases ink.
You should see ink laid down by the print head you selected. Repeat for the other side if needed.
How to replace the batteries
If the controller stops responding, the batteries are the first thing to check.
- Remove the battery cover on the back of the controller.
- Replace both AA batteries. Spares are in the Accessories pouch inside the FieldPrinter case.
- Reinstall the cover.
