Corner control is one of Dusty's Flexible Control capabilities. With corner control, you can station off the walls that are already there. This helps you in situations including:
- TI and renovation rooms too small for a standard setup
- Jobsites without three visible surveyed control points
- Casework and equipment that must line up with existing walls
- Framing on a slab that doesn't exactly match the drawings
Your corner control jigs let you station the FieldPrinter off the 90° wall corners that already exist on site, with no surveyor and no revised layout file. The same principle works with any 90° corner that exists both in your layout file and on the jobsite.
What a corner control jig is
A corner control jig is a 3D-printed reflector base with two faces set at 90°. Pressed into a corner, it holds the reflector's center 2" from each wall. There are two types:
| Jig | Where it goes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Inside corner jig | The inside of a 90° corner | The corner of a room; the inside of an L-shaped wall |
| Outside corner jig | The outside of a 90° corner | The outside of an L-shaped wall; the corner of a column |

Before you start
Corner control only works when the corner in the field and the corner in the file are the same corner. Check these three things first:
- The corner is in your layout file. The Dusty App creates the control point from two lines in the layout that meet at that corner — for example, the two wall lines of an L-shaped wall. If the corner isn't drawn, you can't select it.
- The corner is 90°. Inside or outside, the corner has to be a true right angle. The jigs are fixed at 90° and don't adjust. A corner that is out of square will seat the jig wrong, and the control point will be off.
- The corner is clean. Scrape off mud, pourback splash, and debris so both faces of the jig sit flat against both walls. Avoid corners with baseboard or trim unless the file reflects it.
Recommended: use an as-built layout file. Corner control trusts the existing conditions. If a wall was framed 1" off the plan, your layout will be 1" off too. An as-built file isn't required, but it's the best protection: it puts the corners in the file where they are in the building. If you're working from the design file, check the corners you plan to use against the drawing with a tape measure before you record them.
Step 1: Place the jig and the reflector
- Choose a 90° corner that appears in your layout file.
- Press the matching jig into the corner so both faces sit flat against both walls.
- Set the reflector on the jig's base. The base holds it 2" × 2" from the corner.
Step 2: Create the control point in the Dusty App
The Dusty App creates the control point for you (requires Dusty App 2.15 or later.)
- In the Dusty App, open the Setup tab and scroll to the bottom of the control point list.
- Tap Add Control Point, then choose Control Point for Jig. The app opens Create Control for Jig mode.
- On the canvas, select the two lines that form the corner, then tap Add Control.
- If the point lands on the wrong side of the corner, drag it across the corner while the mode is still open. The point sits inside the corner for an inside jig and outside the corner for an outside jig.
- Repeat steps 3–4 for each corner, then close the mode. Closing locks the new control points in place.
To move a corner control point after the mode is closed, delete it and create it again.
Step 3: Record the corner control points and station
The stationing process doesn't change. Corner control points and surveyed control points are recorded and used together in the same stationing. The only difference is where the reflector sits: for a corner control point, the reflector is on the corner jig, and the jig is pressed into that corner. For every other control point on a horizontal surface, the reflector sits on the control point target as usual. Record each point, then press Station.
Read the error values before you print. A corner control point with a high error usually means the corner is out of square, the jig isn't seated flat, or the wall was built off the plan.
Limits to know
- 2" only. Control Point for Jig always places the point 2" from each line, to match the jigs. It can't be changed. For any other offset, create a control point from two offset lines instead — see How to Create a Control Point From Any Two Non-Parallel Lines.
- 90° corners only, inside or outside. The jigs don't adjust for other angles, and the app assumes the two lines meet at a right angle.
- Only as accurate as the building. The layout will follow the corners you record. If those corners don't match the file, the layout won't match the plan. An as-built file, or a tape check of each corner against the drawing, is the safeguard.
How to get corner control jigs
Corner control jigs don't ship with the FieldPrinter. Contact Dusty Support for a set at support@dustyrobotics.com or (510) 210-3658, or download the 3D-print files and print your own.
