Most reflector accuracy problems come from damage, and the worst of them leave no visible mark. A dropped, worn, or contaminated reflector can make the tracker report a position that is slightly wrong while everything in the Dusty app looks normal, and every line printed from that station inherits the error.
The industry name for this part is a spherically mounted retroreflector, or SMR. In the Dusty app and the rest of this Help Center it is simply called the reflector; Dusty's is a 1.5" SMR, referred to in support cases and shipping paperwork as the Blue Ring Reflector.
Drops and impacts
Dropping the reflector is the most common cause of damage, and one drop can affect the ball, the corner cube, and the optical surfaces at once.
Treat a drop as damage even if the reflector looks fine. Internal surfaces can shift out of alignment with no mark on the outside, and that is the failure mode that produces wrong numbers instead of obvious ones. Check it against the backup reflector in your set before putting it back to work.
Impacts also happen without anyone dropping anything. Support cases include reflectors knocked off the FieldPrinter by site obstructions such as a ladder or a low boom lift. Treat any strike the same as a drop.
Everyday wear
Wear sneaks up on you because it happens gradually and it never announces itself. Repeatedly resting the reflector on the same spot of the ball, or sliding it across a surface instead of lifting and placing it, wears that spot slightly out of round.
This matters because of how the tracker finds the reflector. It assumes the ball is a perfect sphere and calculates the optical center from that assumption. A worn flat spot moves where the center appears to be, so the tracker reports a position that is off by the amount the ball is no longer round.
Handle the reflector by its base or mount, place it rather than dragging it, and pack it in the FieldPrinter case when it isn't in use.
The corner cube shifting out of alignment
Inside the ball is a corner cube: three mirrors set at right angles that send the beam back to the tracker. It is a hollow mirror assembly, not a glass prism. The angles between those mirrors have to hold.
If the assembly fails completely, the corner cube comes loose in the ball, which is obvious. The bigger risk is a small shift that changes the angles while everything still looks intact. A shifted corner cube returns a distorted beam, and a distorted beam is what produces the silent error described below.
Contamination and surface damage
The mirrors inside the corner cube are the most delicate part of the assembly. They have to return the beam with as little distortion as possible, so scratches, films, dust, and clouding all degrade the reading before the tracker ever sees the beam.
Skin oil is the one people cause by accident. Never touch the mirrored surfaces with bare fingers.
What a damaged reflector looks like on the jobsite
Based on support cases, a damaged or contaminated reflector typically shows up as:
- The tracker won't hold lock at distance, but works fine up close
- Lock drops intermittently during a print, in no particular spot
- Stationing error values higher than that job usually runs, or that won't stabilize
- The tracker can't acquire lock at all
The dangerous case produces no symptom at all: a subtly distorted return beam, where the tracker locks, reads a stable number, and the number is wrong.
The Dusty app does not warn you about this. There is no reflector-health check and no alert for a stable-but-wrong reading. The print looks normal on screen and normal on the floor, and the error only turns up later when a trade measures against the layout.
That is the whole reason to check a reflector after a drop instead of waiting for it to misbehave. A reflector that is going to fail loudly will tell you. A reflector that is going to fail quietly never will.
Rule out heat shimmer and seating first
Two things look identical to reflector damage from inside the Dusty app, and both are far more common. Check them before you suspect the hardware.
Heat shimmer. Hot air between the tracker and the reflector bends the beam and breaks lock. Nothing is wrong with the reflector. See Why Heat Shimmer Stops the Laser Tracker From Locking Onto the Reflector.
Seating. The sphere's job is to put the optical center at a known, repeatable point, and that only works when the ball is fully and flush in the reflector mount. A reflector that is tilted, partially seated, or rocking puts the optical center somewhere other than where the system assumes it is, which reads exactly like optical damage. Confirm it against the backup reflector
Your standard set ships with two Blue Ring Reflectors. The second one is there for exactly this. When a reflector has been dropped, struck, or is behaving oddly, swap in the backup and re-run the same measurement from the same tracker setup. If the backup reads correctly where the first one didn't, something shifted inside the first one and it needs to be replaced.
Run the comparison after any drop or strike even when the reflector looks fine. Internal damage doesn't announce itself, and this check is the only way to catch a shift that produces stable but wrong numbers.
It is also the step most people skip, and the only one that actually separates a reflector problem from a tracker problem. When error values climb, the instinct is to suspect the tracker; the reflector is cheaper, far more exposed, and much more likely to be the culprit.
Once the comparison confirms the first reflector is damaged, take it out of service and report it. Don't rotate it back in as the backup.
Handling and replacement
⚠️ Do not clean the reflector yourself, and do not disassemble it. If the reflector is dirty, scratched, chipped, or has been dropped, contact Dusty and we will swap it. Wiping a precision optical surface with the wrong material turns a recoverable reflector into a scrapped one.
- Never touch the mirrored surfaces with bare fingers. Skin oils interfere with the return beam.
- Don't unscrew the ring. It's a threaded assembly, not a user-serviceable one, and opening it exposes the mirrors directly.
- Pack it in the FieldPrinter case any time the system is moved, including across the same floor.
- Place it, don't drag it. Lift and set the reflector rather than sliding it across a surface.
